Up for Spearman, down for Haley, legislature

00_icon_scorecardSpearman. We like how state Superintendent-elect Molly Spearman is talking about a collaborative, open approach in the Education Department. We prefer that over what Gary Burgess suggested in today’s My TurnMore.

Hazelwood. It’s good news to hear that longtime Ethics Commission lawyer Cathy Hazelwood is headed to the state Education Department where she can do more good than being muzzled as she has been lately. More.

Same-sex marriage. It was a banner year for proponents of same-sex marriage, but all of the hurdles aren’t yet removed. More.

Haley, legislature. We knew you were going to ask the state Supreme Court to rehear the Abbeville school funding case, but it’s another stalling, dumb tactic in a case that has been left to rot for too many years. Get on with the hard work of fixing education in poverty areas. More.

Edwards. We’re saddened by last Friday’s passing of former GOP Gov. James B. Edwards, who was laid to rest Monday in Mount Pleasant. Rest in peace. More.

13 hospitals. Thirteen S.C. hospitals will lose 1 percent of their Medicare reimbursements in the next year because they made too many mistakes that could harm patients. More.

Fatal deaths. Fatalities on S.C. roads are up more than 5 percent. More than 800 people died on our highways in 2014. If that’s not a call for modernization, what is? More.
