00_icon_scorecardGiti Tire. Congratulations to the company for breaking ground for its new $560 million plant in Chester County. More. South Carolina now produces more tires than any other state in the nation. The average daily output is 100,000 tires. More.

Greenville. Hats off to the state’s sixth-largest city for being named one of the nation’s top 11 barbecue cities. More.

Charleston, Columbia. Think about how things have really changed in 150 years. In February 1865, Charleston surrendered and Columbia burned.

Up and down

Accidental love. A film shot in Columbia in 2008 is apparently now available for viewing, but only on the small screen via rental. Once titled “Nailed,” the politics-oriented film starring Jessica Biel and Jake Gyllenhall now is called “Accidental Love.” It reportedly will be in a few theaters in March. The climax of the film is in the S.C. House chamber. More. And more, via Wikipedia.

Thumbs down

Bitter cold. A frozen thumbs down to this week’s weather. Anybody still not believe that the climate is changing? Go stick your tongue on an outside metal pole.

Corbin. Sexism isn’t a joke, one protester wrote this week about a remark by state Sen. Tom Corbin, the Greenville Republican who claimed he was joking using a Biblical reference that women are inferior because they are a “lesser cut of meat.” Corbin has apologized but faced national outcries after the remark. More. And more.

Solitary. Sending South Carolina prisoners to solitary confinement for “ridiculously long punishment” is just plain stupid and wrong. The state’s Department of Corrections director, Bryan Stirling, has signed a new disciplinary policy, but isn’t even 60 days still a bit much for a post? More.
