TALLY SHEET: Bills introduced on lasers, gun exemption, more pay, funeral homes

00_icon_tallysheetState senators filed only 21 new bills this week, with many of them being memorials or congratulatory resolutions. In the House, representatives filed just over 50 bills. Of particular interest:

IN THE SENATE

Coal ash. S. 1061 (L. Martin) seeks to allow “coal combustion residuals” from electricity production to be landfilled, with some exceptions.

Nuisance suits. S. 1062 (Campbell) is a tort reform measure that would make existing industrial facilities ineligible for nuisance suits.

IN THE HOUSE

Homeowners Associations. H. 4819 (Ryhal) seeks an Office of Homeowners Association Ombudsman that would keep a registry of HOAs and complaints about them, with several provisions.

Power of attorney.   H. 4827 (J.E. Smith) seeks to enact the state “Uniform Power of Attorney Act” which calls for changes to state law regarding powers of attorneys regulations.

Juvenile justice. H. 4828 (Robinson-Simpson) seeks creation of a “School House to Jailhouse Study Committee” to review state juvenile justice laws and related policies. H. 4841 (Govan) is similar.

Lasers. H. 4829 (Ott) seeks to make it illegal to point a laser device at a car driver.

Custody changes. H. 4835 (Erickson) seeks a new law to allow parents with custody of children to delegate caregiving authority, with many provisions.

Guns. H. 4815 (Putnam) seeks a sales tax exemption for gun sales.

350 years. H. 4842 (Limehouse) seeks a state commission to plan the state’s 350 year anniversary and events surrounding it.

More money. H. 4844 (King) seeks a constitutional referendum calling for a raise in legislative per diem payments to $35,000 or $50,000.

Pay the Funeral Home bill. H. 4845 (King) would allow a funeral home, director or embalmer to refuse releasing a body to a custodian until financial obligations are met.
