LETTERS: Meeting a Palmetto Priority and rebutting a column

Voter registration exceeds Palmetto Priorities’ goal

To the editor:

00_prioritiesOne item I noticed in the Palmetto Priorities listing was the goal of having 75 percent voter registration is South Carolina by 2020.  I believe we are almost at 77 percent voter registration in SC right now.  You might want to double check with the Election Commission but I believe that is correct.  [ Editor’s note:  Ms. Day is correct.]

What I would really like to see South Carolina aim for now is automatic voter registration at the state Department of Motor Vehicles and other public service agencies, such as currently happens in states such as Oregon.  There is also a bill being proposed for this to happen nationally.

But as you have so accurately and often pointed out, our voter turnout (regardless of registration numbers), especially in primaries is frequently abysmal, leading to biases in our representation and political process.  And of course, other factors that you have  written about, such as gerrymandering, also contribute to skewed results.

Rebutting your column called on “The recoil of hope

To the editor:

I worry about an America where everyone expects the government and the working taxpayers to guarantee them at least a $15/hour job (but don’t expect them to work overtime or have good attendance), child care, food, housing, health insurance and the latest iPhone!  But then they don’t expect to pay taxes or want all of it refunded with Earned Income Credits!

I worry about an America where all immigrants, legal or illegal, terrorist or non-terrorist, should be free to cross our borders!

I worry about an America where a Democrat [sic] candidate for president can willfully lie in her previous government role and expose classified emails, but is still allowed to run for the most important position in our country!

I worry about an America where so many citizens and columnist like you are so narrow-minded to believe we can continue to rack up TRILLIONS of dollars in debt and never see the consequences!

Race relations have worsen [sic] under a black president who has always quickly taken sides with Al Sharpton before he knew the facts!  And he came to office to bridge race relations and offering HOPE!!
