Mark your calendar:  Lawmakers to organize in December

The state Senate will meet Dec. 6 for an organization session following the November elections in which all 46 of state Senate seats are up for grabs.  At least eight new state senators are expected to join the state’s upper chamber.

“We voted last year to shorten the session by one month,” said Senate President Pro Tem Hugh Leatherman, R-Florence, in a press release. “I see this organizational session as a way for us to hit the ground running more effectively and efficiently at the start of the upcoming year.”

Meanwhile, the state House of Representatives is expected to have its organizational session in December, too.

New mystery has S.C. political connection from 200 years ago

16-1028-andraA new mystery novel with political connections to days gone by will be available Nov. 1 when Charleston author Andra Watkins’ “Hard to Die” hits national bookstores.

Watkins, who is a New York Times bestselling author for a book chronicling her walk of the Natchez Trace, will offer remarks on the new novel at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at the main library on Calhoun Street in Charleston.

Statehouse Report readers might find the new mystery to be particularly gripping because it weaves the historical story of Theodosia Burr Alston, daughter of early Vice President Aaron Burr who was married to an early S.C. governor (Joseph Alston), with elements of the afterworld and Cold War – perfect for Halloween season.
