Gun laws.  While lawmakers have met across the state in recent months exploring gun laws, it appears some reform may be in the offing, despite some hard fights ahead.  It’s about time.  More.

Tax tables.  The S.C. Department of Revenue says it will update the state’s withholding tax tables for the first time in 25 years.  Again, it’s about time.  More.

More dam regulation.  With as much flooding as we’ve had in the Palmetto State, it makes sense for the state to be a little more intrusive with stronger regulations for smaller dams.  More.

IN THE MIDDLE

Animal welfare.  South Carolina ranks 44th in the country in its animal welfare policies, but state lawmakers may be interested in making some much-needed reforms if a legislative panel that met this week has its way.  More.

Be on the lookout.  Public corruption indictments may come – after the election.  Surprised about the timing?  More.

Pensions.  State lawmakers are eyeing a new kind of state retirement so that new employees stash away money in 401K-like plans, not the pension program.  But with the state pension plan being $20 billion – or more – short, it might really hurt to take away these revenues to buttress the existing plan.  Dark days are ahead.  More.

THUMBS DOWN

Loftis.  While State Treasurer Curtis Loftis says he’s going to challenge an Ethics Commission running that reprimanded and fined him $500 in relation to the hiring of a friend to represent the state, it’s still notable that he was reprimanded and fined.  More.

Drought.  It’s getting worse in the Upstate.  It would be great if some of the water from Matthew could miraculously be shifted to the Upstate.

Maybank.  Former Lt. Gov. Burnet R. Maybank Jr., 93, led a long, fruitful and productive life with significant public service in the Palmetto State. We’re saddened by his passing.  Rest in peace.  Editorial.
