Leatherman for Secretary of State

To the editor:

00_icon_feedbackI expect many South Carolinians, resident and émigré, will share my somewhat unwilling fascination with rumors of the labyrinthine possibilities concomitant to President-elect Trump’s appointment of Gov. Nikki Haley and/or Lt. Gov. Henryt McMaster to various federal cabinet positions.  I, for one, find myself frankly unable to collect my thoughts in the matter.

But if I might be permitted to express a more positive and coherent view, I would suggest there is an outstanding and possibly rather bitter irony in these developments:  The president-elect would, in my most considered and humble opinion, be best advised to appoint Senate President Pro Tempore Leatherman as Secretary of State.  I believe any citizen who has closely followed the pro tem’s career in the service of South Carolina, whose greatness is his only ambition, would agree that Hugh K. Leatherman would bring to that office an abundance of wisdom and gravitas not known since the days of Secretary James Byrnes, and to the lasting security of this country and the fame of the Palmetto State.

In any case, I hope and believe my fellow readers of Statehouse Report will join me in the assertion that whatever our hopes, disappointments and concerns may be, every loyal citizen of this country owes to the new presidential administration and its officers every measure of confidence and loyalty.  As Bismarck tells us, “Politics is the art of the next best thing.”

Give the Clintons a rest

To the editor:

Andy Brack stated in one column that he only wrote about the state politics.

Now he took on Mr. Trump and did not have anything good to say about the people that voted for Mr. Trump.

Seems that a lot of us deplorable,  despicable, unredeemable, thought it was time to send the Clintons home.  I do not know if she was a crook or not, but I know she did not think well of the military. (I am a 20-year retired veteran.)

I will take my chances on Trump.  Let’s give the Clintons a rest.
